Class Description

PREREQUISITE: Please have completed:

  • JP Improv 101, or
  • One or more semesters with a high school or college improv team, or
  • A beginner’s improv course at any theater (scout’s honor)

In Improv 201, students will build on the fundamental skills they learned in Improv 101. Over the course of eight weeks, we’ll explore:

  • How to add additional depth and realism to scenes by committing to prop and environment work
  • How to create more vibrant, engaging characters by exploring motivation
  • How to present a more compelling scene to the audience by thinking about stage presence, blocking, and projection
  • How to perform dramatic (in addition to comedic) scenes
  • How to play additional short-form improv games and long-form formats

By the end of the course, students will be able to:

  • Improvise scenes and long-form sets that take character development into account
  • Run scenes together in montages lasting 15-20 minutes
  • Run a short performance with minimal participation from a director
